I tried the test without wearing my hearing aid. Interestingly enough I scored 89%, better than the average person. I don't know if it is because I am really good at distinguishing which number is being said or if I just got really lucky. Numbers are usually easier for me to hear. Also, it helped that I was told that they will be saying numbers. If they had not, and I was to listen and try to determine what is said without the topic given, then I would probably have a harder time. Give me a topic and I'll look at the clues and will determine what is being said. People with several years of deafness are masters at figuring things out. We do this everyday. I know that if the test used random spoken words I would probably fail miserably.
This test is more appropriate for the average person who may think they are having trouble hearing.
I am going to try it wearing my hearing aid and see how well I do.
*Oh dear, I took the test with my hearing aid on and I scored 75% which indicates that I could have trouble understanding speech in noise. They suggest that hearing aids could help. LOL. I took it again with my hearing aid on and scored 78%.
Ok, then I took it again without my hearing aid--made an 86%. Slightly worse than the first time I took it and way better than with my hearing aid on. Interesting.
I suppose my hearing aid is amplifying the background noise, which makes it harder to understand what is being said. Also, I can't see what is being said.
Therefore, this shows that I really do rely on lip reading.
Check it out and see how well you do. Tell me what your results are.

wow you can hear those test without your hearing aids? I could never do that. I'll get 0% score. But I hear it with it although it probably be 50% or so because I'm terrible with background noises.
ReplyDelete(e, Then you would or should do well in a drive thru! ;)

I don't think they work properly, there are numerous issues with the phone's ability to register certain frequencies. Another issue is if you are a young person then most tend to LOSE higher frequencies near aged 21 anyway, this by no means impairs the person to any significant degree either.
ReplyDeleteThe UK developed the 'mosquito' which was a frequency device aimed at deterring youths gathering and being a nuisance, at teenage they can hear higher frequencies so it was pitched at that level, the novelty is older people cannot hear it anyway, so youths are forced to move away from the irritating sounds.
They could have played operatic arias or classical music since this annoys teenagers no end lol, but a licence was needed for public broadcasting. So if you want to move those noisy teens onward, play classical music at them...
There are some tests that are not very effective over a computer or a telephone line, hearing checks are one of them. 3 MILLION in the UK are mooted to need hearing aids now, no take up.... that's another issue to solve !
Apparently I hear worse with my hearing aid on, at least according to the online HearingCheck test. I think I will experiment next time I am in a noisy area with a lot of background noise. I will try to have a conversation with someone, with and without my hearing aid, and compare.

With my hearing aids I scored 61%; I didn't try without. I'm not surprised since I usually struggle with background noise. Although, like you said, it helped to know to listen for numbers.
ReplyDeleteI got 68%. I can hear all the tones on the hearing test, but I've got CAPD (central auditory processing disorder), which means I don't understand speech very well, especially with background noise. As far as normal conversations go, I understand about as well as someone with moderate hearing loss does without a hearing aid. So I lipread a lot and can't use phones or have a conversation in a restaurant.
ReplyDeleteI never thought that I have a bit of hearing problem. I am so thankful that I tried your hearing test. Now I know that I should visit my doctor about this stuff.

ReplyDeleteGood covered point, lots of people simply put something weired theories in front of public.
ReplyDeleteBut it doesn’t work i think because know one sure how it will going to happen
It looks like just coping ideas which someone has already written. I found even on
popular blogs guest bloggers bring same theories which I already know. I observed they
just try to spice up their article without knowing what really audience want to read.

hello, I took a free hearing test at www.my-hearingworld.com and it told me I possibly have hearing loss. I followed up with a test with my local audiologist and the first test was correct. I've since purchased hearing aids from my audiologist and i'm quite pleased with them. thanks
