I'm Not That Great

Something I would like my students to know.

Every day I do or say something really embarrassing. Yes, every day. Today I accidentally sent a weird text message to some random person I have not talked to in years.

I am probably a thousand times more awkward and bizarre than you think yourselves to be. I have always been pretty uncomfortable, dorky, and strange all throughout Elementary School, Junior High School, High School, College, and Graduate school. I am not always so cool, calm, and professional. The only difference between me now and me during school years, I don't really care anymore. It happens with age.

If I can survive all the mess I have created for myself, you can too. You just have to say, "So what?" and move on. The longer you agonize over how horrible you think your class presentation went, the worse it will get. Just acknowledge that it happened and that you did not die from it; even though you may feel like hiding.

Here are some embarrassing things I have done, to name a few:

- I forgot my name at an important meeting.

- I slipped and fell on a Principal who happened to be carrying a tray of hot coffee.

- I spilled gasoline all over myself at a gas pump (don't ask).

- I unknowingly stepped on dog poop before getting on the school bus.

- I misspelled my name on a Resume.

- I accidentally dyed my hair bright purple before an important babysitting job interview.

- I mispronounced and stumbled over several words when told to read an article out loud during a history college course (who asks their college students to read out loud in class?).

I can go on and on and on.

The point is no one is perfect. Life is messy. Don't worry so much. Life is too short.

It will be okay.
